Another world is Possible
The striking cover illustration of this compilation, which serves as a critique of gobalization, is that of a world map filled in with bar codes. With a CD-size hard cover 48-page book containing articles by Noam Chomsky, Naomi Klein, Subcomandante Marcos, Jose Saramago, and five others, this isi the kind of exceptional album whose booklet is on an equal footing with the accompanying CD. The articles all offer brief but cogent perspectives on the genunine concerns regarding globalization. As for the music, the CD includes songs associated with The Clash as performed by Asian Dub Foundation and Emir Kusturica, as well as songs by Femi Kuti, Salif Keita, The Skatalities, Grandaddy, Lee Scratch Perry, and eight more. If there's a flaa to this elaborately designed album it's that there's very little information on the songs so some of the choices seem rather arbitrary. The album is nonetheless an important release, one that will hopefully contribute to a larger understanding of international social justice issues. It also serves as a fundraiser for the pro-Tobin tax organization ATTAC (Association for the Aid of Citizens), whose slogan is "The world is not for sale." Paul Emile Comeau 02/01/06
