San Francisco Bay Times, CD Review >>
Klezmer (“music” in Yiddish) was brought to the U.S. during the great wave of Jewish immigration between 1880 and 1920; it’s the traditional celebration music of Eastern European Jewish communities that I first heard performed at weddings. A driving beat with wailing clarinets and horns flying above are unmistakable and this is by far the funkiest recording I’ve ever heard remixed by hip-hop guru Socalled. My top picks: “Bubbemeises”, “Moskovitz and loops of it” and “B Flat a la socalled”. 12/01/05 >> go there
