David Krakauer's Klezmer Madness
Bubbemeises: Lies My Gramma Told Me

Today's global hit is a fusion of two vastly different musical genres. In one corner, we have hip hop. In the other, klezmer music. They come together in a new CD called Bubbemeises. The World's Marco Werman sorts it out for us.

The Yiddish word bubbemeis literally means "grandmother's story."

It's when grandma imparts her wisdom to keep kids in line.

That wisdom often comes in familiar phrases, like "wait an hour after lunch before going in the pool" or "stop making that face or it will freeze like that."

Well, musician David Krakauer is rebelling against his grandmother.

The full name of his new CD is "Bubbemeises: Lies My Gramma Told Me."

And he's rebelling in more ways than one.

This IS NOT Grandma's klezmer music.

Instead, Krakauer offers remixed versions of Hasidic chants, funk grooves reminiscent of James Brown, and beat poetry set to hip hop.

Krakauer plays the clarinet.

His band is called Klezmer Madness.

And on "Bubbemeises," he's teamed up with a DJ from Montreal who calls himself "SoCalled."

DJ "SoCalled" and Krakauer use vocal samples, old Yiddish recordings and lots of attitude to turn grandma's old sayings into beat-driven tracks suitable for the dance floor.

In the process, they re-make klezmer into a musical form that connects with both the old and the young.

David Krakauer's new CD is called "Bubbemeises: Lies My Gramma Told Me."

This Saturday night he'll bring his klezmer hip-hop sound to Carnegie Hall.

His grandma would be proud.

For The World, I'm Marco Werman.
