Mary Jane Lamond
Storas
(Turtlemusik)

Mary Jane Lamond's latest recording is a 2-disc collection of Gaelic folk.  This Scottish Gaelic singer from Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island works to preserve the traditions of her native land with this innovative collection.  She is part of a movement to reverse the rapidly disappearing Gaelic language with the use of modern interpretation.  Cape Breton is the only place outside of Scotland where Scottish Gaelic is still spoken and Storas, which means treasures, strives to keep the language alive.  Apparently there are only 500 native speakers left on Cape Breton Islands, so the work of Lamond is especially important.  The songs are preserved, as in many other cultures, through the tradition of oral singing while working, especially by women working with their hands.  Lamond's music is an effort to reignite interest in the language and its culture before they are gone.   03/01/06 >> go there
