Les Yeux Noirs
Tchorba (Hamonia Mundi/World Village)

When classically trained French violinists Eric and Oliver Slabiak began exploring their Jewish roots, they found many musical intersections with the Gypsies.  The discovery of those commonalities, as well as their own pop-culture influences, led to Les Yeux Noirs.  Their latest album seamlessly blends finger-popping funk with age-old Eastern Eurpoean melodies, light-fingered rock tempos with swirling dervish fiddling.  Although the set mixes originals with old tunes, it's difficult to place the songs on a time line.  All have an ancient-modern, roving cafe musician sound.  Where many world music fusions come across as forced graftings, the brothers Slabiak show great empathy for the sources they twine together.  The result is a bright harmonious tapestry displaying similarities between cultures that many prefer to keep seperated.
