CABRUERA

"Proibido Cochilar: Sambas For Sleepless Nights"

(Piranha)

Forró is a folk style from Northeastern Brazil and while its roots are
African, its rhythms are typically dominated by accordion and guitar, not percussion. The five men in Cabruera base their music on forró but they¹ve blended it with rap, reggae, samba, funk and lots of booming electronic dance rhythms for a hybrid that¹s exceptional, even in a country known for its fusion of styles. "Xingatório (Mockery)" is a bit of galloping funk with an R&B feel, rap vocals and slippery accordion fills, while "Zabé Sabe (Zabé Knows)" leans in a more traditional direction with blend of live and programmed percussion that brings to mind mid-period Talking Heads. The band¹s acoustic sounds - flute, guitar and percussion are pure Brazil while their international club beats provide easy access for outsiders. (j.poet) 01/22/06
