Cabruêra
"Proibido Cochilar"

Bands like Wilco or Radiohead don't have the corner on cutting-edge creativity.  World music is full of artists that blend indigenous music with modern and ancient styles.  Northeastern Brazillian band Cabruera (loosely meaning "bunch of goats") proves that on "Proibido Cochilar" ("Sleeping Prohibited").
Anyone spinning this disc may lose a few winks.  They'll be busy dancing to the freestyle grooves produced by these folllowers of the "Mangue Beat" movement led by the late Chico Science.  Be forewarned: There are no sunny bossa nova tunes on this Brazillian dance jam.
Using unrelenting syncopated samba carnival rhythms, Cabruera takes "forro" (northeastern Brazilian rhythms influenced by African styles) and melds them with hot hip-hop, rap, and rock.  The group's customized "forro" dance beats enhanced by its richly rhythmic guitar/accordion tandem burst through.  Also evident is the ensemble's extensive use of "coco", a singalong of improvisational call and responce vocalists.
The record label calls Cabruera's music "the next generation of samba."  Adventurous music fans will find it's a boast that dances true.
