Cabruera injects some funk, rap and rock edge into their renditions of samba on Proibido Cochilar Sambas For Sleepless Nights (Piranha/World Music Network). The band also ventures into house, reggae, jungle and even electronica, though the samba beat stays at the center of most tunes. With lead vocalists Arthur Pessoa or Ze Guilherme alternately being sentimental or animated while singing in Portuguese, Cabruera’s 14 selections include instances of Forro-funk (the title cut and “Xingatorio”), more standard samba (“Eu Sambo” and samba filtered through a drum ‘n’ bass setting “Magistrado Ladrao”).
