As part of the South African group Bongo Maffin, Thandiswa Mazwai is one of the most popular singers in her country. Based on her solo debut, she deserves wide recognition beyond those borders. Shrugging off the limitations of Bongo Maffin's kwaito music -- an African take on American house -- Thandiswa finds inspiration in American R&B, jazz and gospel from the '60s and '70s, sometimes coming off like a 21st-century Randi Crawford, the stirring voice for The Crusaders. The highlight is the eight-minute Revelation, a swinging jazz number that explodes into a gospel rave-up that's absolutely irresistible.
