Julia Sarr & Patrice Larose

A queerly detuned drum and an elegant, intriguingly foreign voice introduce you to the first fascinating CD of 2006: Set Luna.

Courtesy of Senegalese singer Julia Sarr and French flamenco guitarist
Patrice Larose, Set ("So I've Observed" in the Wolof dialect) mixes its
subtly shaded genres with the ease and zest of a great chef. When it's
blended, you get a music that's light yet hardy.

Although reminiscent, in spirit, of Salif Keita and Youssou N'Dour (the
latter duets with Sarr on Set), the duo's malleable music and clear
vocalizing are genuinely iconoclastic. From its roots in Indian-born,
nimble-fingered flamenco, Set moves through the dancing strains of duende and bulería to find its softly melodic, Parisian-inspired, Afro-Brazilian center. But it's Sarr's voice - a cool breeze on "Namana," a clarion coo on "Waruna," a sexy sway on "Guem" - that truly separates the ballad-based Set from the world-music pack.
