The New York Post, Mary's Hot Pick for Friday, Feb. 24 >>

By Mary Huhn

The good news is that Mardi Gras is next week. That's followed by the bad news, for those who indulge: so does Lent. Celebrate accordingly with Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, who bring their modernized, yet traditional, Cajun two-steps and waltzes to Joe's Pub (425 Lafayette St., at Astor Place; [212] 539-8770) tonight at 7:30. Riley, who's been lugging an accordion around since age 7, says the band name includes his name because of a Louisiana tradition that spotlights the accordionist. While Riley learned his craft from his grandfather and great uncle, fiddle player David Greely was inspired to learn by a fiddler who opened up for Black Sabbath. It wasn't all downhill from there. On the new disc, "Dominos," Riley strives to do songs that haven't been covered by other Cajun bands, to help keep their sound fresh, while maintaining the traditional Louisiana sound. Tickets are $20.  02/24/06 >> go there
