The wordy hype by poet Magdalena Gomez on the cover of this CD promises something new in Latin music, but a glut of ambition turns what could be interesting into bland, world-fusion ooze. A name that translates to "Zemog, the Good Rooster" and occasionally bizarre vocals that can bring to mind Puerto Rican versions of both Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Le Tigre aren't enough to make Cama de la Conga much more than tolerable. Despite the relaxed atmosphere alluded to by the album's title, "Bed of the Conga," there's just too much going at once too much of the time, with vocals, horns, drums, bass, flute, keyboard, and guitar all vying for the listener's attention. The result is that bandleader Abraham Gomez-Delgado's creations sound unfocused and excessive, and Zemog El Gallo Bueno begs for half the instrumentation and twice the direction. - K. Stewart
