Metro L.A., CD Review >>

Even the name of this album has you scratching your head in curiosity over what its all about, and from the opening SECOND of this disc, you instantly KNOW it's something special. This compilation begins with trio Jangylyk perfoming a piece composed for three Jew's harps, obscure instruments that rely on the resonance of one's mouth to create sounds similar to low electronic vibrations. And the string arrangements on the other tracks of this cd, too, are just unreal...the unusual rhythms and textures that, apparently, come only from a place as a remote to us as Kyrgyzstan, a mountainous country northwest of China. In today's overtly and shamelessly commercial music landscape, perhaps it takes a genuine project such as this to get something as unique. So, suffice it to say, this cd definitely "keeps it real." The vocal chanting music that appears on a few tracks is a little over the top for my taste, but still, I feel like I am learning something when listening to this cd. It's the musical equivalent of a National Geographic television special. The cd is accompanied by a DVD with an interactive instrument glossary, map of the origins of music and more, all handsomely packaged in a sophisticated folio case.  Beautiful work. Looking forward to Volume 2.
