Arielle Dombasle is a celebrity in France, the high profile of pretentious, if sexy, philosopher Bernard Henri Levy (and in France there's nothing dry or musty about philosophy). The American-born, Mexican-reared chanteuse revisits the lands of her childhood on Amor Amor. A collection of mid-century standards from the United States and Latin America, Amor Amor features an orchestra playing with the champagne sway of dance bands of yore as they accompany Dombasle's seductive vocals with music of deferred passion. Eschewing any misguided efforts to update her arrangements (she doesn't turn "Rum and Coca-Cola" from calypso to reggae to transform the yearning title tune into electronica), Dombasle sounds as if she stepped from the grooves of 1940s vintage 78 rpms. It's romantic music for an age bereft of romance.
