Why do so many Bollywood singers seem to be of a strikingly similar voice? Because in many cases they are the same versatile singer. It's been more than 50 years since Asha Bhosle followed her sister Lata Mangeshkar into the Indian film industry (by far the world's largest and most prolific). Together, they became the twin towers of "playback singers," vocalists who provide the artistry for lip-synchers in the mostly musical fare produced by Bollywood. As such, their voices are the soundtrack to millions of lives in Southeast Asia. Now in her 60s, Bhosle is a mainstay of the Indian pop charts and MTV Asia. Her voice is sweet and remarkably youthful, but also playful and sexy in unexpected ways. "Love Supreme" is a two-disc intro to Bhosle's work. One features a mind-boggling buffet of duets from her Bollywood triumphs, the other newly recorded ghazals (based on classical Persian/Urdu poetry), where her vitality and resonance are impressively showcased.
