Asha Bhosle

"Love Supreme"

Times Square Records

Asha Bhosle's name may be or maybe not one you have heard, but you most certainly have her voice at some point. She is one of the most recorded vocalists in the history of Bollywood music. Of course, since they take the crown as the world's largest film industry that is really saying something. This double-CD is a collection of first, her singing a series of ghazals, which are classical love poems in the Urdu language. The music itself while based on Ragas (a mood which is the result of a blend of certain notes) from North Indian Classical Music, the mood takes on a variety of styles such as Lounge, Funk and Jazz Rock. The instrumentation uses not only electric guitars but also various American Hip-Hop beats and other programmed drum effects.

Being involved in wide-ranging music styles is nothing new for Asha, has she has been breaking musical boundaries for over 50-year career. Not only in her illustrious Bollywood music but with works ranging from classical to bhangra projects all the way to collaborations with Michael Stipe and even Boy George!

The second CD is comprised of duets from her Bollywood classics. All the ingredients are here: Distorted drums, swirling organs, sitars abound, plinky-sounding surf guitar, intense horns and of course Ahsa's high-pitched voice rising above it all with alongside her male counterpart. At 72 years of age Asha shows no real signs of slowing down and this collection lets you know why her music is loved from all over South Asia to Africa and Europe.
