Asha Bhosle "Love Supreme" (Times Square Records) http://asha-bhosle.tripod.com/
Asha Bhosle has spent the last five decades as one of the handful of Bollywood vocalists, as countless actresses have lipsynched to her singing while performing elaborate song-and-dance scenes that the Hindi film genre is known for. Still an active recording artist at the age of 72, Bhosle has released the two-disc "Love Supreme" album. The first disc is made up of songs in the classical Indian ghazal style, but in a Westernized, updated form. Bhosle's voice doesn't disappoint, but the "contemporized" music is predictably bland. The second disc is the real treat here, a compilation of Bhosle's favorite romantic duets, selected from her back catalog of 12,000 songs. With partners like R.D. Burman Mohammed Rafi, and Bhosle's sister (and primary competitor) Lata Mangeshkar, I can hardly imagine a better introduction to classic Bollywood in all its seductively bizarre glory.
