Although Bhosle was nominated for a Grammy earlier this year for You've Stolen My Heart, her recording with the Kronos Quartet, Love Supreme is her first solo album in six years.

Quite different from her film work, it consists of eight ghazals, a form of North Indian classical song with lyrics drawn from traditional Persian and Urdu love poetry. As such, the sound is less frothy and the tone more serious than her Boltywood hits, although there is nothing classical about her approach, which sets the songs to pop, rock, funk, jazz and even lounge arrangements. Bhosle is now 72, and her voice remains a glorious instrument However, not everyone will appreciate hearing it in such Western-sounding context. 05/06/06
