...Among the musicians who accompany Downs are the great Tex-Mex accordionist Flaco Jimenez, bassist Max Baca, late of Albuquerque's esteemed Los Hermanos Baca, and keyboardist Michael Ramos, who opens for Downs in Santa Fe and Albuquerque.

Downs guests on a couple of the tracks on Ramos' latest CD, Chicano Zen. His art, like Downs', is about assimilating different cultural influences into a unified whole. Ramos' group, Charanga Cakewalk, is all about dance grooves rather than political or social statements. The individual cuts on Chicano Zen cover a wide swath of musical territory, much of it based on repeated phrases and rhythms, under which Ramos delivers his lyrics in what can be better described as talking than singing. In concert, Ramos is joined by a guitarist and a bank of samplers and electronics, which can fire loops that fill in the sonic spaces the keyboard and guitar can't cover.
