Dynamic vocalist and mbira (thumb piano) soloist Stella Chiweshe is splendid on both old and new songs from the two-disc release Double Check (Piranha/World Music Network). One disc offers modern material, with Chiweshe teaming with guitarist and synthesizer player Gideon Zamimba and Taurai Chinama on nine songs whose topics range from early morning reflections to statements on poverty and boredom. The second disc delves back to some early hits and shows Chiweshe's evolving vocal approach along with prime examples of her mbira skills. This is highly recommended, especially for those unfamiliar with Chiweshe or mbira music in general.
