ROMICA PUCEANU & the Gore Brothers/Sounds From a Bygone Era
Puceanu is an interesting story. An indigenous Romania gypsy singer that was hailed as the Romanian Billie Holliday in her area, chose to keep it local, got killed in a 1996 car crash and would have been forgotten if not for the growing interest of worldbeaters to dig deeper into the far corners. Keeping it local to the poor suburbs of Bucharest playing in cafes, this 1966 recording shows that she knew how to milk a song well even if you don't know what she's talking about. Bringing lessons learned from sex symbols of other generations to the fore, this is a really different and compelling date that deserves to be busted out of the ethnic ghetto of world beat. Check it out, it's kind of like stumbling in your own eastern European Buena Vista Social Club before Ry Cooder beat you to it. 04/29/06
