Is Smadj an acronym for Sourcing Mad Audio Dialects Joyously? Unfortunately not, but it could be what Paris-based Tunisian producer and master oud player Jean-Pierre Smadja had in mind when he gathered Malian singer Rokia Traore, South Africa's Bushmen of Kalahari, international beatsmith Talvin Singh, and Indian singer Amit Chatterjee together for this mysterious, percussive, pan-global affair. Smadja makes the most of his computer software's electronic effects on spacey, dub-dance tracks like "Vogue," which features the faint vocal ricochets of Ekova's Deirdre Dubois, while on "Sel" and "Aurore," Smadja's vigorous oud soloing sits comfortably on top of velvety, atmospheric beats. Primarily a head journey to the Middle East and Africa, Take It and Drive is a cool oasis in the midst of a sunstroke-induced fever dream — and consequently, one of this year's best leftfield world music albums. 05/11/06 >> go there
