Take it and Drive

Tunisian composer/musician Smaj (nee Jean- Paerre Smadja) wields his laptop like virtuose instrument on this aptly titled collection- but any expectations of airless, sterile music are dashed by the organic pulse and textures of 10 tracks that began/as-live performances. (Two additional tracks are remixes). Samples and sound-shaping programs are inventively mixed with acoustic oud and guitar, jazz principles and an interna tional cast of pals that includes Malian vocalist Rokia Traore, former Ekova frontwoman Deirdre Dubois, Asian Underground's Talvin Singh and Indian guitarist/vocalist Amit Chatterjee.
