Le Trio Joubran
When Palestinian oud player Samir Joubran heard the jazz/rock/flamenco guitar sound of Al Di Meola, Paco de Lucia, and John McLaughlin, he was inspired to create a similar beyond-traditional approach for his instrument. The oud is a 4,000-year-old Arabic lute with a body shaped like half a pear, with up to 13 strings and a neck that bends back toward the musician at a sharp angle. The Nazareth-born, 30-something Samir teamed up with his two 20-something oud-playing brothers as Le Trio Joubran and self-released Randana, a five-song, mostly instrumental effort with cuts ranging from 5 to 18 minutes in length. Melding Arabic and Indian classical music, Spanish flamenco, and American jazz, the siblings use their picks to improvise melancholy notes up and down the 42 different Arabic scales. Cinematic throughout, the disc closes with their sole cover, “Ahwak,” a dramatic folky love song with vocals, recorded live in Ramallah.
