Whether doing romantic or political material, the wonderful vocalist and tres player Pedro Luis Ferrer is a marvel. English translations are provided to the songs on Natural (Escondia) for those who feel it necessary, but the vibrant sound, dramatic flair and commanding presence that Ferrer shows on the disc’s 16 tunes transcend one’s command of Spanish. These are usually four or five-member tunes, with Ferrer’s dashing leads complimented by an array of percussive textures and beats supplied by Basilo Perodin on bongos, claves and marimbula, while backup singers Lerlys Morales and Lena Ferrer complement, color and contrast Ferrer’s vocal lines. These tunes are similar in tone and scope to those popularized by the members of the Buena Vista Social Club, but Pedro Luis Ferrer has his own distinct and captivating
