PEDRO LUIS FERRER
Perhaps this release will catapult Pedro Luis Ferrer into the stratosphere occupied by the Buena Vista Social Club-longtime Cuban artists who, only in their later years, became adored by an international public. In Havana, Ferrer has been a fixture for decades, though his singular voice has been silenced by Castro's regime, which banned Fearer's songs from the airwaves "because they indirectly criticized Cuba's social conditions. On "Natural," Ferrer fills the album with beautiful, quirky music, ranging from love tunes ("Something Tells Me") to pleas and laments ("The Sinner's Changuisa"). With his smooth voice and guitarlike tres, Ferrer reaches a perfect harmony with Lerlys Morales and daughter Lena on backup vocals and Basilio Perodin on claves and other instruments. A gorgeous album from an artist who, in his 50s, is in peak form.
