It's the return of the winning father and son team of Balkan brass music. These Serbain gypsies blow their horns like there's no tomorrow. And, indeed, while you listen there might not be, because it's impossible to get out of the moment. The sound is huge, as you might expect with nine horns and four percussionists belting it out, but it's always in control, beautifully arranged, and played with a skill that verges on the daring as they haul double-time through an instrumental. It's their fourth disc, and now Marko Markovic, all of 18 years old, is a fully integrated band member, offering some mesmerizing playing on trumpet, flugelhorn and the more traditional kaval. He's still not up to his father's standard, but Boban is a very hard act to follow, one of the great flugelhornists. Much of the material is their own, but strongly informed by the tradition, even on pieces like "Latino" or "Meksinkanka," which veer away from Europe. Quite simply, it's a class record from one of the best outfits around. Balkan brass might be a big thing these days, but the top names remain that way because they keep nibbling away at the envelopes. Between the young and older, this band looks set to remain in the first rank for another generation to come.  08/01/06
