Festivals are great, if you can afford them. (See previous page.) But if you can’t, take a page from Diss-Count G’s playbook (see page 15) and find something to enjoy at no cost to you. It’s easy. ’Cause you know what time it is. And if you don’t, well, here’s a little sampler of L.A.’s summertime free-music menu.
At downtown L.A.’s California Plaza, Grand Performances’ sprawling 20th-anniversary season starts on Saturday, June 17, at 3 p.m. with renowned folksinger Arlo Guthrie and three generations of his family. On Saturday, July 1, it’s juiced-up Mexican funk quintet Kinky with Latin-laced electronica by Bogota’s Sidestepper. The next day, hear vocalists Emeline Michele from Haiti and Sara Tavares of Portugal, whose songs speak of family roots with the hope of dissolving political strife. On Saturday, July 8, Ska Cubano mixes vintage dance sounds of Jamaica with rumba and salsa from Cuba. 05/11/06 >> go there
