Relix, CD Review >>

Island hopping is an old human institution, and although the distance between Cuba and Jamaica is not grand, musically they couldn't appear more different. Appearances are something Ska Cubano is intent on breaking down, most noticeably in the inherent collaboration of son with ska and calypso, their respective loves. Theirs is a time when early harbingers of reggae were influencing the fres-led acoustic folklore of Cuba, and vice- versa. Their second recording explores this relationship exhaustively in an impressive, natural-sounding fusion. And while a pop-focused luster overtakes much, of the casual grittiness, the strength of Beny Billy's overpowering voice remains the focus. On the quick-paced guitar and horn interplay of "Cachita," led by Billy's intense lyrical play, Cuba and Jamaica emerge in plain sight of each other. 08/01/06
