Iranian-born, Indian-raised Ali possesses the sort of throaty, ethereal voice that lends itself marvelously to the sort of ambient ethno-techno she’s become known for as a member of Vas and Niyaz. On this, her second solo album, she fulfills the dual prophesies of Natacha Atlas (pan-ethnic, dance-floor–ready electronica) and Ofra Haza (Middle Eastern pop made palatable for Western ears) by dovetailing her expressive, if ethnically vague, voice into gorgeously arranged, future-ready soundscapes that are as much Dead Can Dance as they are Enya. Between Ali’s glossolalia and the imprecise geography of the music, Elysium winds up being thick with meaninglessness, but it’s a luscious, enveloping meaninglessness that fuses downtempo fashionability and electro-exotica in a way that’s inviting and adventurous. 07/27/06 >> go there
