Kinavana (Stern's Africa) Grade: A
Africa's influence on Cuban music is well-known; not so Cuban music's influence on African sounds, which is celebrated on the gorgeous "Kinavana." Kekele, a Congolese group, judiciously" spices its male-vocals-and-acoustic-guitar sound with flute, strings and contributions from, among others, African saxophone legend Manu Dibango. While the rhythms gently percolate, the mood stays sweet and mellow, making this a perfect soundtrack for summer. Download: "Mace." (Appearing tomorrow and Sunday at the Lowell Folk Festival.
