With reggaeton a top seller, new releases blend Latin with other genres
LATIN MUSIC SALES have gotten a big commercial boost in the past year, buoyed in part by the growing popularity of reggaeton - a blend of Puerto Rucan music with reggae and hip-hop styles that's produced top-selling artists such as Daddy Yankee. In 2005, Latin was the only music category to see an increase in sales, selling 36 million units, up 13% from the previous year, according to Nielsen SoundScan. This summer, a new group of releases are blending Latin music with other genres, from Scandinavian folk to Central African music.
