Saborit
Que Linda Es Mi Cuba

After the success of the Buena Vista Social Club, the market was saturated with Cuban records.  The we got bored and releases from Cuba became as rare as short speeches by Fidel Castro.

Perhaps now equilibrium can be restored, for there is still plenty of fine music coming out of the island, as the eight-piece Saborit, led by Eleodoro Leon, prove.  Working in the traditional acoustic style known as campesino (in effect Cuba's country music), the rhythms sway with an old-fashioned simplicity that has more in common with Buena Vista retro than the hard-edged beat of timba or high-energy salsa.  And although Saborit lack a really distinctive singer, the sheer exuberance of their rusticated pickin' and grinnin' wins through.
