Yat-Kha's throat singer 'covers' up on latest album

The voice of Tuvan throat singer Albert Kuvezin is so terrify ing that it's a relief to hear him covering familiar rock songs by groups like Motor- head, Iron Butterfly and Led Zeppelin on his band Yat-Kha's latest album, "Re- Covers."

Even though Kuvezin's low, gurgling voice makes him sound like Mr. Miyagi from "The Karate Kid" possessed by a deep-throated demon, Kuvezin still is able to pack plenty of emotional punch into his delivery.

Yat-Kha's cover of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is the perfect exam ple of how Kuvezin's voice can be strangely heart warming, or at least heart breaking. Reminiscent of weary Johnny Cash cover ing Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" a few years ago, Kuvezin's voice reeks of death as he sings the song's chorus and lyrics like "Get a taste in my As desperation takes hold."

Kuvezin is backed only by an acoustic guitar on "Love Will Tear Us Apart," but elsewhere on the album Yat-Kha's other members more than flex their musi cal muscle, especially on mind-blowing rendition of Iron Butterfly's "In A Gad- da Da Vida," in which Yat- Kha's music slithers around Kuvezin's voice before reaching a crescendo as Ku vezin burps out the chorus.

"Re-Covers" is not only an excellent album, but great way for Yat-Kha neophytes to get acquainted with the band.
