 Albert Kuvezin andYat-Kha

"Re-Covers"; World Village

At first you can't believe your ears. Is this some slow-motion Siberian toad croaking Hank Williams' "Ramblin' Man." Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and Bob Marley's "Exodus?" This album of classic rock, country and folk tunes sung deeper than deep seems at times to be an odd collection of parodies. But it's nothing of the sort. The songs are heartfelt and skillful interpretations from Albert Kuvezin, throat singer from the Russian region of Tuva (bordering Mongolia) who was already known tor reviving the musical traditions of his land and infusing them with rock attitude. The tracks on this disc are more transformations then mere covers.  Kuvezin's vocal feats make the difference, but the band is just as key. Hearing Led Zeppelin, Captain Beefheart and Motorhead played with zithers, Jew's harps and other traditional instruments is a revelation.
