Albert Kuvezin andYat-Kha
Re-Covers/Fusion III
If you've ever wondered what Led Zep, Kraftwerk or the timeless Captain Beefheart would sound like interpreted by a Tuvan throat singer, Albert Kuvezin has you covered. Kuvezin and his mates from the isolated Central Asian republic of Tuva bring an otherworldly core-shak ing vibe to 14 songs in which guitars vie with ancient horse-hair cello, jaw's harp, shakers and skin drums. Kuvezin's eerie vo calizing combines a Tom Waits-like death rattle with the high- frequency buzz of approaching locusts as he reconstructs When the Levee Breaks, Love Will Tear Us Apart and In-a-Gadda-Da-Vi- da. He doesn't so much carry tune as drag it bloodied behind him. He plays it totally straight, which makes Re-Covers hilarious, but also gravity shifting and weirdly thrilling. ***
