New jazz

Bassist Dave Holland’s latest Critical Mass (Dare 2/Universal) offers a very different instrumental configuration, with trombonist Robin Eubanks and vibist/marimba player Steve Nelson operating within the unit in the manner usually heard from a trumpet and a pianist. But Holland’s compositions also continually surprise, placing as much, if not more emphasis on lengthy unison sections, inspired interactions and duet sequences as extensive solos.

There are still moments when Holland’s bass expertise is showcased, as well as the explosive playing of Eubanks (a great player) and tenor/soprano saxophonist Chris Potter (excellent on tenor, not quite as memorable on soprano). But the instrumental wild card proves to be Nelson, whose role often shifts during pieces from being the rhythm section centerpiece to a prime soloist, then back to steering things along with drummer Nate Smith through the transitions back to the main melody. Holland also varies his playing, sometimes offering straightforward bass backing, other times neatly contrasting the rhythms presented by Smith and Nelson.

Critical Mass is a freewheeling set that accents both superb individual and tremendous group performances. 08/25/06 >> go there
