Dave Holland Quintet
 Critical Mass (CD)
Dave Holland has had several shining moments in jazz on double-bass, with one memorable moment being the time he performed as young man, with the legend ary Miles Davis on the Bitches Brew sessions. He now gives back to that oppor tunity by putting together quintet that includes mem bers ranging in age from 32 to 60. The multigenera- tional mix shines on eight outstanding tracks. Pick your favorites from, "The Eyes Have It," a song he penned for his granddaugh ter, and the laid back "Easy Did It/ Holland encouraged his Quintet to compose ma terial for this CD, and the result is, "Vicissitudes" by saxophonist Chris Potter; "The Leak" (Nate Smith, drummer); "Full Circle" (Robin Eubanks, trombon ist); and "Amator Silenti" from vibraphonist Steve Nelson. In between are two more Holland tunes, the Ara bic-flavored "Secret Garden" and the ensemble delivers potpourri of sound with "Lucky Seven." A defining album! 08/18/06
