Dave Holland Quintet, Critical Mass

Starting with a warm, slightly West Coast modernism in the opening ensemble, Chris Potter loses no time in asserting a confident, careening and stimulating aggression. He and Robin Eubanks collide elegantly in several collective passages, including an interlude that interrupts the classical rigor of Steve Nelson's fragile "Amator Silenti." Holland has brought forth a thoughtful, if not always lovable, CD. -John McDonough

Hats off to the imagination the bassist's group perpetually foregrounds. But there are moments when I'm missing the simple pleasures of pizzazz; these tunes have a mathematical tinge. Would love to hear them do a Broadway disc á là Paul Motian. -Jim Macnie

I'm a huge fan of the quintet, especially the double-solo approach, and new drummer Nate Smith though his recorded sound is a bit dry, has a relaxed feel and Jack DeJohnnette- like multidirectionality that's most welcome. But other than the New Orleans groove of "Easy Did It," the dancing "Lucky Seven," and the free section of "Amator Silenti," everything else feels pretty ordinary. -Paul de Barros 10/01/06
