Zizzy's concert benefits children

The periodic jazz medley . . .

The Regina Jazz Society presents the Mike Murley/David Braid Quartet on Saturday at Le Bistro (3850 Hillsdale St.). Murley (a Juno Award-winning saxophonist) and Braid (piano) will be joined by special guest Tara Davidson (saxophone), Jim Vivian (bass) and Ian Froman (drums). Admission is $20 (Jazz Society members) and $25 (non-members). Show time is 8:30 p.m. The group will be promoting two CDs -- the latest Murley-Braid release (Mnemosyne's March) and Davidson's new recording (Code Breaking) . . . Regina jazz buffs are in for another treat Nov. 24, when a group led by Michael Occhipinti performs at Le Bistro. Occhipinti was named guitarist-of-the-year at the 2002 National Jazz Awards.

Bev Zizzy's annual "What About The Children?'' benefit concert is to be held Nov. 18 at Alfredo's Fresh Pasta and Bistro (1801 Scarth St.; F.W. Hill Mall), beginning at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $10. All proceeds will go to the Foster Parents Plan of Canada. Zizzy is the regular vocalist for the 'Round Midnight jazz ensemble. 'Round Midnight will open the evening with a short instrumental set. Zizzy will then be featured in a solo set. To conclude the show, Zizzy will perform with the group -- which also consists of Randy Epp (keyboards), Bob Firnesz (trombone), Gerry Galloway (drums), Art Neale (tenor saxophone), Glenn Polivka (guitar) and Ross Purse (bass).

Mark Miller -- one of Canada's elite jazz writers -- has completed his seventh book on the finest musical genre, entitled A Certain Respect For Tradition: Mark Miller on Jazz. The 208-page trade paperback includes 80 selected writings from 1980 to 2005. The book is available from The Mercury Press (www.themercurypress.ca) for $19.95. The former Globe and Mail jazz critic profiles or reviews the likes of Art Blakey, Benny Carter, Sarah Vaughan, Rosemary Clooney, Chick Corea, Joe Henderson, Tony Bennett, Cassandra Wilson, Wayne Shorter, Wynton Marsalis, Scott Hamilton, Keith Jarrett, Clark Terry and Pat Metheny.

Wynton is the most-publicized Marsalis, but make a point of treating yourself to the wonderful pianistic stylings of his father. Ellis Marsalis has an effortless swing . . . The Bushwakker (2206 Dewdney Ave.) has live jazz every Monday, from 8 until 10:30 p.m. Next on the agenda is vocalist Dawn Alexis. The following Monday (Nov. 20), Nuff Talk will perform funk- and rock-influenced jazz numbers . . . Regina Community Radio (CJTR, 91.3 FM) has RJS Jazztones Mondays from 4 to 6 p.m. Jazz Society president Peter Champagne is the host . . . CBC Radio Two presents After Hours every weeknight from 10 p.m. to midnight. Andy Sheppard is the host.

The widely acclaimed Dave Holland Quintet has released its latest CD, Critical Mass, on the Universal Music label. The group consists of Holland (bass), Chris Potter (tenor and soprano saxophones), Robin Eubanks (trombone), Steve Nelson (vibraphone, marimba and tambourine) and Nate Smith (drums) . . . Regina-born Tilden Webb is the pianist on Foundations -- a CD by the Vancouver-based Jodi Proznick Quartet. Proznick (bass) and Webb (the bassist's husband) are joined by Jesse Cahill (drums) and Steve Kaldestad (tenor saxophone). The recording is on the Cellar Jazz label.
