Modem swing Bassist and composer Dave Holland's quintet is at once extremely open-minded and rooted in the jazz tradition. The group-Holland, Teaneck trombonist Robin Eubanks, tenor saxophonist Chris Potter, vibist Steve Nelson and drummer Nate Smith always swings, but in a modern way. There will be pieces with blues essence, and those that lean more to ward free expression. The quintet, one of the finest bands around, plays selections from its new CD, "Critical Mass" (Dare2) as well as other staples of its repertoire, when it appears tonight through Saturday, 9 and 11, at Birdland, 315 W. 44th St., New York. $30-$35 music charge, $10 minimum.
