Dave Holland Quintet (Dare2)

Bassist and composer Holland continues to find ways to give the forward edge of jazz a warmth and accessibility.  This superb contemporary jazz fivesome plays hearty, smart originals by the bassist or his bandmates: Teaneck trombonist Robin Eubanks, tenor saxophonist Christ Potter, vibist Stave Nelson and drummer Nate Smith.  These songs mostly have some kind of spiffy groove; they'are rhythmically charged even if they're slow, but there's always an openness, too, room for free-ranging expression. 12/29/06
