Hazmat Modine Bahamut (Barbes)
It was said that the Band sounded like rock 'n' roll from the Civil War, their lyrics and music steeped in a bygone America yet somehow transcending the history of American music. Likewise Hazmat Modine is a rock band from another era, perhaps a parallel dimension where klezmer musicians entertained on street corners alongside Mississippi bluesmen. The opening track, "Yesterday Morning," moves to a slow-chugging reggae rhytm, but its melody echoes Gershwin amid flourishes of Hawaiian guitar and blues licks. Led by a pair of harmonixa players and powered by tuba and a gaggle of unusual instruments, this New York band travels to weird, little-known crossroads of old-time music.
