BOLE2HARLEM, Bole2Harlem, Volume 1 (Sounds of the Mushroom): The fruit of Saturday night jam sessions at a French-Moroccan restaurant in Manhattan, Bole2Harlem's music is a fresh, often exciting fusion of Ethiopian folk and dance grooves, hip-hop beats, electronica, reggae, dub, gospel organ, brassy funk horns, percussion, keyboards, kora and vigorous handclapping. Maki Siraj's somewhat stiff raps serve as percussive accent rather than accompaniment to the swirling rhythms; he's outshined by the magnetic vocals of Tigist Shibabaw (sister to Ethiopian singer Gigi). Regardless, the music engages with its breezy emphasis on fun, from the celebratory title track and jubilant recreation of children's tune Hoya Hoye to the drum-beating closer Africaye!
