Bole 2 Harlem Vol.1
Sounds of the Mushroom

The most refreshing thing to come from Ethiopia since Gigi's two records on Palm (and constant work alongside Bill Laswell), Bole 2 Harlem -- brainchild of producer David Schommer -- takes a cue from the Laswellian camp into hip-hop terrain. Keeping it truly in the family (Gigi's sister Tigist is the featured female), Schommer's superb ear and deep, dubby bass stylings add an underlying groove for the African elements to play upon, namely poignant percussion, an outstanding horn section and Tigist's bouncing hooks against Maki Siraj's pulsing flow. At a time when most Africa hip-hop mimics its American counterpart, for both better and worse, Bole 2 Harlem is a refreshing and unique take on numerous genres, subsequently forging its own.
