This is an upbeat and eclectic mix of various styles of music from around the world, ranging from traditional Ethiopian music to New York hip-hop to funk. Not to worry if you do not understand Amharic, the main language of the album’s lyrics. The vocals on this album are smooth and melodious—wonderful to listen to for their beautiful sound alone.

The diverse percussion and rhythms of this album are highly notable. Regardless of the tempo of the track, the album provides the listener with an array of entrancing percussion and rhythms suitable for dancing and, reminiscent of dub music, thoughtful meditation. Indeed, “Bole 2 Harlem: Volume 1” resonates with a fine, spiritual sound that appeals to both mind and body.

The problem this album may face in reaching a larger North American audience is that the album’s Amharic lyrics pose a significant language barrier. This is not a criticism of the album itself but the relationship that the English-speaking North American audience has to the album. However, for true fans of Bole 2 Harlem, eager to know the meaning of the album’s lyrics, the language barrier mentioned may no doubt be overcome. What better way to learn Amharic than by the great music of Bole 2 Harlem! 02/26/07 >> go there
