The jam-band scene, and efforts to fuse different strands of world musics, can create some very interesting sounds - none more intriguing than that of Balkan Beat Box, a New York City-based band with roots in many Mediterranean cultures. Founded by Israeli-born sax player Ori Kaplan and percussionist Tamir Muskat, Balkan Beat Box blends influences from Arabic, Hassidic, Spanish and Balkan traditional music with jazz improvisation and hip-hop beats, resulting in a high-energy sound that's hypnotic and exciting. In live performance, the band incorporates multimedia visuals to build even more energy - and a strong audience rapport.
