Strokes, Balkan Beat Box mark eclectic weekend of music
But the secret treasure of the weekend was Balkan Beat Box, who played to a frenzied, dance-hungry crowd at Castaways. The Sunday might crowd was modestly sized, but provided enough energy to sustain the band past midnight. Drawing from Balkan, Israeli, and American musical traditions, the critically acclaimed Beat Box is not an average "world music" group. They provided an excellent, genre-defying combination of electronic beats, hip-hop sampling, Eastern European horns, thundering bass guitar, and jazz-like improvisation. It's no surprise that their mesh of sinister horns and pulsing grooves is reminiscent of Gogol Bordello and Firewater; Balkan Beat Box has members from both (Ori Kaplan and Tamir Muskat). Songs seamlessly blended into each other like a perfectly produced DJ set, and provided the perfect atmosphere for hard dancing.
