Boban Markovic Orkestar
Live in Belgrade
***
(PIRANHA) Boban Markovic leads one of the most innovative Gypsy brass bands in Serbia. Serbian brass bands play a folkoric style based on the music played at weddings and compete at a yearly festival in Belgrade, where this set was recorded. Markovic is so popular that many of the competing bands play his compositions in the contest, so his band no longer competes. These days, Markovic is interested in taking his music international. Last year, he collaborated with Frank London's Klezmer Allstars on the Brotherhood of Brass album, and his eclectic approach is in full flower here. "Otpisani" uses a stop-start rhythm and funky brass punctuations that are straight out of the James Brown book of arranging, "Mesecena" is played with a manic energy that sounds like Spike Jones leading a Russian Dixieland band, while the wild, Latin-flavored improvisations on "Disco Dzumbus" are based on a familiar one-four-five rock 'n' roll turnaround.
