Boban Markovic Orkestar Live in Belgrade: The Best Trumpet of Guca
Gypsy-Serbian brass bands have made an impression in the last few years, and listeners who really follow their music will undoubtedly have heard of Boban Markovic's ensemble, which regularly wins the competition for such groups held at a huge festival in Guca each year. But despite the claims of the liner notes that the Gypsies saved an old regional tradition of brass band music and the fact that most of the tunes here are traditional, the music itself doesn't sound it. Influences from contemporary sources like various kinds of pop and even jazz are readily discernible. Still, for sheer high spirits and energy, this music delivers. It must be an absolute blast to hear live. 08/01/03
